Shenanigan:

Trickery, games; skulduggery. To "call", "claim" or "declare" shenanigans is to rhetorically and ironically label something as officially deceitful, improper, or otherwise incorrect.

Lane Splitting:

Riding a motorcycle between two traffic lanes between cars.


There were a ton of cars on the roads during rush hour, so I started lane splitting to get ahead of the traffic.

Vocabulary - A Ticking time bomb

A Ticking time bomb:

A “ticking time bomb” basically means a situation that can happen at any time; something bad that will happen.

That man smokes too many cigarettes, drinks too much alcohol, eats too much junk food, and never exercises.  His doctor is worried about his heart and told him that he’s basically a ticking time bomb unless he changes his lifestyle.

Many experts say that the economy is like a ticking time bomb.  It’s OK now but it’s going to fail badly sometime in the near future.  We just don’t know exactly when.

Book hangover:

When you've finished a book and you suddenly return to the real world, but the real world feels incomplete or surreal because you're still living in the world of the book.

I have a really bad book hangover today, I could hardly concentrate at work.

Vocabulary - Deep Bro Talk

Deep Bro Talk:

A serious talk between two close male friends, in which they talk about all the things going on in their life at the moment. Deep bro talks are sacred meetings, and all the things discussed during them cannot be told to anyone else without the other's consent.

Sam had a deep bro talk with David about his crush on Sammy.

Vocabulary - Diabolical

Diabolical:

Evil or caused by the devil.

Sometime after her acceptance, she exhibited signs of her former diabolical symptoms.

Larceny:

The act or crime of stealing; theft.

Brook now faces probable jail after an indictment for larceny and income tax evasion.

Democrats have always been concerned about the abuse of power, not petty larceny.

He was probably right, for our kids were much too busy to think about drugs or larceny.

Old terminology such as larceny, larceny by a trick, false pretenses and embezzlement were replaced by modern terms.

Precarious:

Likely to fall, or likely cause someone to fall.

Are you sure he's safe on that ladder? It looks very precarious up there.

Gait:

The way someone walks, especially when it is a little strange or unusual.

Whistleblower:

An insider who reveals an act, generally illegal, taking place, which the person committing the act would not wish to be public.

The CEO was sent to jail after a whistleblower who worked at the company leaked documents to the press proving illegal stock manipulation.

Vurp:

A burp laced with a little vomit, usually occurs when you've had one too many and it has become difficult to distinguish between the two.


I made it through the whole night without vomiting, not including vurps, of course.

Vocabulary - Off the Rack

Off the Rack:

If you buy something “off the rack”, it means that you are buying it directly from the store.  It means that no one is making a special size made for you. When you get something like a suit, or a dress, made perfectly for your exact body, it is called getting “tailor made” clothing.


Vocabulary - Throw in The Towel

Throw in The Towel:

To quit or give up.

I hate my job. I’m going to stay for a couple more weeks and if things don’t get any better I’m going to throw in the towel and look for a new job.

 My relationship isn’t going too well. My girlfriend and I always fight. I things don’t get better soon I think we might both agree to throw in the towel.



Origin: The phrase originally comes from boxing. If a boxer is really hurt during a fight, their coaches and trainer might realize that they need to stop the fight because the boxer will get seriously hurt. They may suffer brain damage. The way to stop the fight in professional boxing is to throw the towel into the boxing ring.

Vocabulary - Mosquito Tinnitus

Mosquito Tinnitus:

A ringing in the ears that sounds like a hovering mosquito, brought on by the anticipation that mosquitoes WILL begin to torment you just as you are dozing off.

I spent half the night swatting mosquitoes that were there. Guess it was just mosquito tinnitus.

Vocabulary - Motorpsycho

Motorpsycho:

An individual who rides their motorcycle with complete and total disregard for the safety of themselves or others.


The guy who won't shift out of first and pops wheelies in my neighborhood on the same street where kids play and ride their bikes is a total motorpsycho.


Vocabulary - Wardrobe Creep

Wardrobe Creep:

The gradual yet unstoppable process by which your wife or girlfriend's clothes take over your wardrobe. It often begins by the male partner naively agreeing that he will temporarily host a single garment because of a short term capacity issue in the female wardrobe. From this point on the male no longer has control of his wardrobe.

Becky: Darling, I'm just putting my long dress from Kirsty's wedding in your wardrobe - I've run out of hangers in mine. Is that OK?
Chris: Of course, go ahead
(Six months later, and the effects of wardrobe creep are clear)
Chris: Why is my wardrobe full yet I only own two items in it?

Don:

literary To put on a hat, coat etc.

Flamer:

A “flamer” is a derogatory term used to describe a gay man.

Origin: Probably from the fact that in the past some certain cultures put homosexual men on fire.

Vocabulary - Poof/poofter

Poof/Poofter:

An offensive, derogatory word meaning a gay man.


Everybody thought Gavin was a poof because he liked classical music and going to the ballet.

Boys in my high school used to go "poofter bashing". They'd find a guy in the park they thought was gay, and they'd beat him up.
