Red Tape:

If there is a lot of “red tape” it means there is a lot of annoying rules or “paperwork” to do.


I wanted to start my own business last year, but I didn’t because there was just too much red tape.

I think our country’s economy would be a lot better if there wasn’t so much red tape every time someone wanted to start a business.

It is possible for you to move to the USA, get an American passport, and become a real American citizen, but the process takes a long time and there is a lot of red tape.

Idiom - Catch Someone Red-Handed

Catch Someone Red-Handed:

If someone is caught red-handed, they are caught in the act of doing something wrong such as cheating or stealing.


I used to cheat in exams until I was caught red-handed by my teacher. I stopped doing it after that.

How can you say you didn't steal the book? You were caught red-handed walking out of the store after you'd hidden it under your jacket.

Note: catch someone with their pants down is similar to the above idiom, but it suggests catching someone in an unprepared state or sexually compromising situation.

John couldn't convince them that he was innocent. They caught him with his pants down.
