The past is such a curious creature:

The past is such a curious creature,
To look her in the face
A transport may reward us,
  Or a disgrace.

Unarmed if any meet her,            5
  I charge him, fly!
Her rusty ammunition
  Might yet reply!

Analysis:

In this poem Emily says that everybody has a past whether it be good or bad. This past can be a reward or a disgrace. Our actions and decisions make our past and they determine how our encounter with our pasts will be. In this poem we can see Dickinson's belief in the hereafter and the influence of our worldly life upon it.
